Unix Timestamp Converter
Turn Unix epoch time into readable dates in UTC, your local time or any timezone — and turn a date back into a timestamp. Seconds, milliseconds, microseconds and nanoseconds are detected automatically.
Timestamp → date
Paste a Unix timestamp. The unit is guessed from its length.
Date → timestamp
Pick a date and time, or type any date string (ISO 8601, RFC 2822…).
How to convert a Unix timestamp
Paste the timestamp
10 digits are seconds, 13 milliseconds, 16 microseconds and 19 nanoseconds. Override the unit if the guess is wrong.
Choose a timezone
Results are shown in UTC, your browser’s local time and any IANA timezone you select, along with ISO 8601 and relative time.
Go the other way
Pick a date and time or paste a date string to get the matching Unix seconds and milliseconds.
What is Unix time?
Unix time (also called epoch time or POSIX time) counts the seconds since 00:00:00 UTC on 1 January 1970, ignoring leap seconds. Because it is a single number with no timezone, it is the standard way to store and compare moments in databases, logs, APIs and JWTs.
| Unit | Digits (today) | Typical source |
|---|---|---|
| Seconds | 10 | Unix date +%s, PHP time(), JWT exp/iat |
| Milliseconds | 13 | JavaScript Date.now(), Java System.currentTimeMillis() |
| Microseconds | 16 | Python time.time_ns() // 1000, PostgreSQL internals |
| Nanoseconds | 19 | Go time.Now().UnixNano(), OpenTelemetry |
Get the current timestamp in code
date +%s # shell
Math.floor(Date.now() / 1000) // JavaScript
int(time.time()) # Python
time.Now().Unix() // Go
SELECT EXTRACT(EPOCH FROM now()); -- PostgreSQLThe year 2038 problem
Systems that store Unix time as a signed 32-bit integer overflow at 2147483647 — 03:14:07 UTC on 19 January 2038. Modern platforms use 64-bit integers, which last for billions of years.
Frequently asked questions
How do I know if a timestamp is in seconds or milliseconds?
Count the digits. Current timestamps in seconds have 10 digits; in milliseconds they have 13. The converter detects this automatically and shows which unit it used.
Does Unix time depend on timezone?
No. A Unix timestamp is the same everywhere in the world at a given instant. Only its human-readable representation changes with timezone.
Can Unix timestamps be negative?
Yes. Negative values represent moments before 1 January 1970. For example, -86400 is 31 December 1969 at 00:00 UTC.
What is ISO 8601?
An international date format like 2026-10-01T14:30:00Z. The Z means UTC; an offset like +05:30 means local time in that zone. It sorts correctly as text and is the safest format for APIs.
Does Unix time include leap seconds?
No. Unix time assumes every day has exactly 86,400 seconds. During a leap second, the timestamp repeats or is smeared, depending on the system.
